A 4 wheel drive is recommended for road 864 for comfort but not necessary.

A 4 wheel drive is mandatory for the second part of road 862.

Turn right when leaving the hotel and drive 13 kms to Dimmuborgir to see the lava formations.

Leaving Dimmuborgir turn right back on road 848, reach road 1 and turn towards Egilsstadir. 

After the junction, drive 6 Kilometers and reach Namafjall and the boiling mud pool (on the right) and Krafla area and Viti Crater on the road to your left (8km)

Back on road 1, drive 20 kms for road 862 or 31 kilometers for road 864.

Road 862 or 864 you will be able to stop halfway to the most powerful waterfall in Europe – Dettifoss – keep going north (if on road 862 stop at rock formations of Hljóðaklettar ) and reach the paved road 85 and turn left.


Drive 2 kms and turn left to visit  the gigantic horseshoe-shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi

Back on road 85 drive along to the cost and reach the charming town of Husavik (60 km) internationally renowned for its great whale watching.

Leave Husavik towards the South back to Myvatn (50 km)
